Welcome to WinterPaws Arctic Breed Rescue!

We are a Missouri animal rescue organization dedicated to the welfare of endangered Arctic breed dogs, primarily Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies, in the Springfield, Missouri and surrounding area. Our mission is to assist in the rescue, rehabilitation and training of endangered and neglected arctic breed dogs by promoting responsible pet ownership through humane education, networking for proper resources, advocating spay/neuter programs, and providing sanctuary and care until responsible homes can be found.

Our primary focus is to assist in the rescue of dogs in immediate danger and to see that every arctic breed dog that needs one finds a forever home with responsible, educated owners. WinterPaws acts as a liaison and referral service for existing rescues, shelters, law enforcement entities, humane societies and individuals.  This may involve contacting other rescues, helping arrange transports, temporarily fostering rescued dogs in transit, accepting dogs for rehabilitation, contacting other rescues/sanctuaries or helping individuals rehome their pets.  We also assist individuals in locating Malamutes or Huskies for adoption, whether from our rescue or another shelter or rescue.

We do not accept requests from the general public to rescue animals from an animal shelter (i.e., we will not go pull a dog for you on the promise that you will take him) but are able to consult with you on options and assist you in locating additional help. We also do not pull animals directly from Springfield Animal Control; however, if you are aware of an animal in the shelter, please contact us so that we can contact the appropriate organization(s) that may be able tag and rescue the animal.

We occasionally have dogs available for adoption.  Some may be from individuals rehoming their pets, others may be rehabilitated dogs who have suffered abuse or neglect situations.  Every situation is unique!  Please see our Adoption page for more details.

Giving Up Your Pet

It is a difficult decision to decide to give up your family pet. It is very traumatic for the dog and for all human members of the family, especially children.  Family circumstances can change in an instant and we understand that.  Before taking your beloved pet to a humane society or animal control facility, please contact us about alternatives.  If there are behavior issues, we can recommend experienced and certified trainers who can assist you with identifying the issues and help you correct them so you can enjoy your pet for years to come.

If the ultimate decision is to rehome your pet, WinterPaws offers a home evaluation service to owners who need to rehome their pet in exchange for a $25 donation to WinterPaws. Our experienced volunteers will visit and evaluate potential homes based on our standard criteria for homes and your individual requests.  We then will
"advertise" on safe, reputable web sites and through community channels to help find your pet a new, appropriate, forever home.  Click on the Rehoming A Pet tab or contact us for details about this service.
